Garmin’s new horse tracker: Blaze

Pet-trackers seem to be the hot new thing! You’d think cats & dogs would be the first target for this tech but no! Garmin has come out with a brand-new horse tracker called Blaze. Let’s look into it!

Why horses? Probably because it is very difficult to measure heart-rate through fur. That probably makes product development for cats and dogs pretty complex. However, at the underside of the horse tail there is no fur, and large blood vessels to get a pulse, making it a great spot to place a tracker!

Personally, I think this is a great idea for a product. It is pricey, coming in at about $600, but horse-owners might not be to dissuaded by this. The tracker itself looks like a traditional Garmin watch face, except it is integrated into a velcro strap that wraps around the horse’s tail.

This tracker has some pretty cool features. It links with rider’s Garmin watch, although but can also use it through the Garmin app if you don’t have a compatible watch. The tracker, combined with it’s own app, measures your horse’s heart rate, skin temperature, stride, and gait, and also has GPS tracking activities. The most interesting part to me is that you can record your horse’s workout alongside your own while you are riding and compare who was working harder!

As with Garmin’s human-tracking abilities, Blaze also has a recovery period tracker. Overall it is marketed more towards use during training, as it would not be practical as a 24/7 device. It has a 25h battery life and would get dirty, although the strap is, thankfully, washable. Mainly, it requires a bluetooth connection, which means you won’t be able to track your horse long-distance.

Blaze can be used on multiple different horses. Feedback from some equestrians suggest that some horses may find the tail strap “tickly”, but that they are glad it is not a piece of tack. One rider mentions they are still waiting for Garmin to integrate “fall detection” to the horseback riding activity on the watch, which seems to be a crucial feature.

If I had a horse (and disposable income) I’d be all over this. How about you?

I have also been tracking my own (non-horse) pets! I recorded a “Live with it” segment, where I tested out the Moggie Cat Tracker for 3 months, to see how it measured my cat’s activity. Check it out here:
