The Tanglewood woodpecker project has begun!

3d printed woodpecker decoys

Back in April, the CVN lab was approved to begin a project at the Tanglewood Research Station. Tanglewood, also known as the J. Nicholene Bishop Biological Station, is a 570-acre nature reserve and research facility that is a part of the University of Alabama. We are very excited to take advantage of this wonderful research station to begin a research project investigating woodpecker brain injury. This involves first finding the woodpeckers, which has been a challenge! CVN undergrads have been setting up feeding stations, decoys and camera traps to find the secretive birds. Alabama home to eight woodpecker species, including the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker! We hope our research will help increase our understanding of these beautiful creatures and their neurophysiology.
